**LILIA**
By Karen Morley

Lilia's eyes wandered to the bedroom window, where beads of rain were creating small rivers as they ran down the foggy pane of glass. "Rivers," she thought. "Like the rivers of tears that I cried when I discovered the truth." Her heart surged again as the thought overwhelmed her and the words of the song that was playing on the radio suddenly broke through her wall of gloom.

"Tears of Ice", she mused as she recognized the song. A small smile graced her tender lips. "How appropriate." The love ballad seemed a perfect way to describe the changes that had come into her life since she had met the stranger in Paris. Her thoughts strayed to that memory. The brief interlude with the man had transformed her into a new being. Her innocence was gone, stolen in a moment of passion and then the coldness of the world was heaped upon her in an icy frost when she realized that she had been used. And she would never be the same again. The smile faded from her lips as the words of the music drifted back into her consciousness and she listened intently as the music played....

"Once I held a snowflake,
A teardrop in disguise.

A fleeting glimpse of my soul,
so fragile, and sublime.

Though snowflakes melt away in time,
my heart continues on.

I will not let cold-hearted men
make glaciers in my mind."

The song ended and something more upbeat came on, but she had no feeling for it, so she got up from her bed and turned the radio off. The rain was coming down harder now, but Lilia paid it no mind. It was time to leave those memories behind. She raised her head high, determined to forget about the stranger and to move on with her life. As she opened her bedroom door she realized that while the experience was painful, it was a valuable lesson that made her stronger and more determined to pursue her original goals. She spoke outloud, though no one was near to hear her words, "I'm okay and I'm going to be fine." And with those thoughts strong in her mind, she walked out the door.
