FAQ [Frequently Asked Questions]:

  • Do you take Commissions?
No. I prefer to have complete artistic license when doing a makeover or repaint and need to let my imagination soar. But feel free to suggest a style or idea on the Guestbook, and you never know! It may show up for sale.
  • How do you make the eyes look so real?
That is a very difficult question to answer, because my eyes are done in many layers and require much study of the human eye. Shadows and light-placement are very important! For those who wish to try repainting, I suggest buying a lot of book and magazines where you can get a good picture of various eyes and practice your techniques. Everyone's technique is different and you will want to develop your own style. Actually, even if you try to copy another artist, it's nearly impossible because all artists are unique. So that practice to develop your own style is all important!

  • What kind of paint do you use?
I use Windsor & Newton Artist Quality Acrylics and Golden sealers. Do not use craft-style paints in your work as they may not hold up well over time.
  • How do you remove the original paint on a doll?
I use a product called "Once Removed" -it is a nail-polish type remover and works very well on those difficult-to-remove lashes on Gene® doll. Other removers can be used, pure acetone is also a good paint remover. Remember, after removing paint to give your doll a water and baking-soda bath to neutralize the effects of the remover.
  • Do you accept Layaway?
Yes, on some items. But, I do not offer layaway on dolls that sell for under $300 even though most of my work is selling for more than that. If a layaway is agreed upon, then 1/2 is due immediately with the balance due in 30 days. No refunds on layaways.
  • What do you use for eyelashes?
My new style is to create a painted lash. This style saves the collector from accidentally damaging the lashes. But when I do use a natural eyelash on a doll I prefer a soft human-hair lash of high quality.
  • If I buy one of your dolls, how will I know how to care for it?
It's best to treat all artist dolls and makeovers as the works of art that they are, not as toys. Heavy play and restyling hair is not a good idea on a repaint. Especially if an artist creates a specific style for the doll, it's best to leave it as-is. Remember that chemical sprays, water and sunlight can be damaging to any work of art that is exposed to these factors for any length of time! If water gets on your dolls finish, do not try to rub it off. Use a soft towel and lightly dab the excess water off. Let the water dry naturally and all should be well.
  • What kind of clay do you use for your sculptures?
My clay of choice is a polymer clay called "ProSculpt". ProSculpt is a durable, low-fire clay that creates a doll with a realistic finish.
